THE FOLLOWING DAY HE PROCEEDED TO NIGER'S CAPITAL, NIAMEY, WHERE HE SPENT TWO DAYS AS THE GUEST OF PRESIDENT HAMANI DIORI.

    AMONG THE OTHER NOTED PERSONALITIES AT THE AIRPORT TO GREET THE SECRETARY GENERAL LOME, WAS FOREIGN MINISTER JOACHIM HUNLEDE. DURING HIS 48-HOUR STAY IN THE TOGOLESE CAPITAL, MR. U THANT ASKED TO BE KEPT CONSTANTLY INFORMED OF THE DEVELOPMENTS IN NIGERIA AND BIAFRA.

    THE FOLLOWING DAY (JANUARY 12), MR. U THANT WAS RECEIVED AT NIAMEY BY PRESIDENT DIORI AND A LARGE PARTY OF GOVERNMENT LEADERS AND DIPLOMATS. IN HIS SPEECH OF WELCOME PRESIDENT DIORI SAID THAT NIGER APPLAUDED THE SECRETARY GENERAL'S "EFFORTS TO BRING UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN MEN AND PEACE BETWEEN NATIONS."
    THE NEXT MORNING, THE UN DIPLOMAT DROVE TO THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE, WHERE HE WAS TO HOLD FURTHER TALKS WITH PRESIDENT DIORI. ONCE AGAIN, IT WAS REPORTED THAT, AMONG THE MANY SUBJECTS UNDER DISCUSSION. THE TWO LEADERS GAVE PRIORITY TO THE NIGERIA-BIAFRA SITUATION. AT THE END OF THE DAY, U THANT LEFT FOR UPPER VOLTA, ON THE NEXT LEG OF HIS 10-NATION TOUR.
