TROOPS AND POLICE MOVED SWIFTLY TO ENFORCE THE CURFEW IN SINGAPORE LAST NIGHT (MONDAY) AFTER 12 INCIDENTS OCCURRED DURING A TWO-HOUR RELAXATION OF CURFEW. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DEAD IN SINGAPORE'S CURRENT SPATE OF INTER-COMMUNAL VIOLENCE IS NOW 13. EIGHTY-SEVEN PEOPLE HAVE BEEN INJURED, MORE THAN 500 ARRESTED - MOST OF THEM FOR BREAKING THE CURFEW.

DURING BRIEF PERIODS OF CURFEW RELAXATION, SOMETIMES BETWEEN TWO AND THREE HOURS, THE STREETS AND MARKETS ARE THRONGED WITH PEOPLE DOING THEIR SHOPPING. OFFICE WORKERS ARE ABLE TO GO TO WORK IN THE MORNINGS ONLY, BEFORE THEY HAVE TO RUSH BACK HOME TO BEAT THE CURFEW. SOME PEOPLE - LIKE THE COUPLE DASHING THROUGH THE STREETS IN THEIR CAR - MANAGE TO GET MARRIED IN THE FEW HOURS OF FREEDOM.

WITH THE PROCLAMATION OF A STATE OF EMERGENCY, POLICE HAVE URGED THE PUBLIC TO OBEY CURFEW REGULATIONS IMPLICITLY. TROOPS AND POLICE PATROL THE STREETS, AND MAN BARRICADES WHICH HAVE BEEN SET UP TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER OUTBREAK OF VIOLENCE SPREADING TO OTHER PARTS OF THE ISLAND.

YESTERDAY (MONDAY) IN SINGAPORE, MALAYSIA'S DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, TUN ABDUL RAZAK ANNOUNCED THAT AN INDONESIAN-INSPIRED PLOT TO CAUSE CIVIL DISTURBANCES AND CHAOS IN MALAYSIA HAD BEEN UNCOVERED AND A NUMBER OF ARRESTS HAD BEEN MADE.
