    WEST GERMAN PRESIDENT HEINRICH LUEBKE HAD A NARROW ESCAPE ON MONDAY (JULY 25) WHEN A WIRE-CONTROLLED MISSILE BROKE LOOSE AND LANDED ONLY 109 YARDS (100 METRES) FROM WHERE HE WAS WATCHING A MILITARY DEMONSTRATION.

    DR. LUEBKE WAS WATCHING A SHOW PUT BY A GERMAN ARMY TANK REGIMENT AT AN ARMAMENTS PRACTICE GROUND WHEN THE MISSILE SPRANG FROM ITS LANUCHER ON ONE TANK. THE ROCKET SPUN MADLY IN THE GROUND, THROWING UP A SPRAY OF SPARKS, BUT DID NOT EXPLODE.

    THE WEST GERMAN PRESIDENT, WHO ARRIVED AT THE DEMONSTRATION BY HELICOPTER, WAS MET BY GENERAL DE MAIZIERE AND OTHER HIGH-RANKING OFFICERS. THE EXERCISE WAS GIVEN TO DEMONSTRATE THE POTENTIALITY OF TANK CORPS AND OF THE LATEST ANTI-TANK WEAPONS.
