    IN BRITAIN, ONE OF THE MAIN EVENTS OF THE WEEK'S YACHT RACES IN THE COWES REGATTA WAS HELD TODAY (TUESDAY) -- THE BRITANNIA CHALLENGE CUP.

    SIXTY YACHTS COMPETED, INCLUDING THE ROYAL YAWL BLOODHOUND, RACED BY THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH, AND SOME OF THE CREAM OF BRITISH AND INTERNATIONAL OCEAN-GOERS.

    WITH THE DUKE WAS HIS DAUGHTER, PRINCESS ANNE, STANDING BY THE HATCH. THE DUKE TOOK THE HELM OF THE 34-TON YACHT AS IT SET OUT OVER THE 33-MILE (OVER 50-KMS) COURSE. THE RACE IS FOR A CUP PRESENTED BY THE LATE KING GEORGE VI TO THE ROYAL YACHTING ASSOCIATION AND CARRIES A FIRST PRIZE OF GBP25. BUT MORE IMPORTANT IT CARRIES POINTS FOR THE ADMIRAL'S CUP FOR WHICH SEVEN COUNTRIES ARE COMPETING.

    THE DUKE, USED TO THE RIGOURS OF LONG-DISTANCE RACING COMPETES AT COWES EVERY YEAR. AFTER A SLOW START CAUSED BY A STRONG TIDE AND LACK OF WIND THE COMPETITORS WORKED THEIR WAY DOWN COURSE. THE DUKE CROSSED THE FINISHING LINE FOURTH BUT ON HANDICAP WAS PLACED TWENTY-THIRD. THE WINNER: THE AUSTRALIAN YACHT, CAPRICE OF HUON.

    HOWEVER, BRITAIN TOOK A HEALTHY LEAD IN THE ADMIRAL'S CUP WHEN QUIVER IV, NORYEMA, IV, AND FIREBRAND WERE PLACED SECOND, THIRD, AND SIXTH IN THE BRITANNIA CUP, THE SECOND EVENT OF THE FOUR RACE SERIES. THE LATEST STANDINGS ARE BRITAIN 193, AUSTRALIA 159, NETHERLANDS 132, UNITED STATES 113, FRANCE 103, SWEDEN 96, AND IRELAND 62.
