The second phase of an ambitious housing scheme is underway in Zanzibar Town, Zanzibar. Called?

  • Description

The second phase of an ambitious housing scheme is underway in Zanzibar Town, Zanzibar. Called the Michenzani Housing Scheme, this second phase will, like the first, provide homes for some 5,000 people. The completed section of the scheme consists of eight blocks of flats,m comprising 1100 apartments.

The project currently under construction also comprises eight high-rise apartment blocks, the largest of which has 178 separate dwelling units.

The flats are free to Zanzibaris, who only have to pay for electricity and water. Though basic and simple in design, the flats are airy and hygienic - a vast contrast to the traditional mud-walled dwellings of the majority of Zanzibaris. Most of the tenants and scheduled occupiers have already, or will soon have their homes demolished to make way for the apartment blocks.

The name "Michenzani" means the place among the tangerine groves - but tangerines have not grown in the vicinity for many years. The tall, grey blocks of flats make for a less picturesque Zanzibar, but a very practical one.

Among the labour force on the development are many students who do the work as part of their National Service.

SYNOPSIS: The second phase of an ambitious housing scheme is underway in Zanzibar Town, Zanzibar.

Called the Michenzani Housing Scheme, this second phase will, like the first, provide homes for some 5,000 people. Among the labour force are many students. They do the work as part of their National Service.

Like the already completed part of the project, this second phase will comprise eight high-rise apartment blocks providing 1100 flats. The largest block will have 178 separate dwelling units. In the main the flats are one and two bedroom designs.

Though basic and simple in design, the apartments will be airy and hygienic - a vast contrast to the traditional mud-walled dwellings more familiar to the majority of Zanzibaris.

The flats are free to Zanzibaris who are only required to pay for water and electricity. Most of the tenants already resident at the completed site and the majority of those who will be allocated apartments in the new buildings, have had to sacrifice their original homes to the bulldozers to make way for this large-scale housing project.

Some new residents move in to a new home on the Michenzani Housing Scheme. Michenzani means the place among the tangerine groves - but tangerines have not grown in the vicinity for many years.

The tall, grey blocks of flats make for a less picturesque Zanzibar, but a very practical one.
