  • Description

There may be a road lining the capitals of two major west African nations, Ghana and the Ivory coast, if the recommendations of a ministerial committee are carried out.

SYNOPSIS: The joint Ivory Coast-Ghana Permanent Commission has been meeting in Abidjan, capital of the Ivory Coast. The commission was set up in 1971 to reinforce links between the two nations, and this was its second meeting. The first was held last year and its recommendations were being discussed this time.

    M. Arsene Assouan Usher, Minister of Foreign Affairs, led the Ivory Coast delegation. Colonel Roger Felli, the Commissioner for Foreign Affairs represented Ghana. In a joint communique, the countries agreed on five point -- to pursue cooperation in the fields of law, the movement of population, tourism, trade and road transport. They also agreed to investigate areas of co-operation in postal and telecommunications services, maritime and air transport, agriculture, fishing, public health, information, education culture and sport. The commission also adopted a draft treaty on the extradition of wanted persons.

The road linking the two capitals could arise from the transport agreement which puts the proposed route through the towns of Takoradi, Axim and Aboisso. In their talks, the two foreign ministers also explored the possibility of their co-operation being extended to other west african nations.
