    The first Ambassador to be appointed to the Malagasy Republic from The People's Republic of China, presented his credentials on Thursday, 18 January. He is Ambassador Li Yao Wen, whose residence is in Tanzania.

    When he presented his credentials to General Gabriel Ramanantsoa, the Ambassador praised the "anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist" struggle which he said was traditional in Madagascar.

    General Ramanantsoa in reply praised China's national unity which, he said, had enabled the country to evolve according to the principles of Chairman Mao Tse Tung.

    The agreement to establish diplomatic relations was made in November when Malagasy Foreign Minister Didier Ratsiraka visited Peking.

    SYNOPSIS: The new Ambassador from the People's Republic of China to the Malagasy Republic arrived in Tananarive to present his credentials. The envoy is His Excellency Li Yao Wen. He is based in Tanzania.

    The new Ambassador and his diplomatic colleagues presented their credentials to the Malagasy Head of State, Major-General Gabriel Ramanantsoa. Ambassador Li praised the "anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist" struggle which he said had been traditional in Madagascar. He also praised the positive measures taken by the Malagasy Government, since it came to power last May, in consolidating the country's independence, and developing the economy.

    President Ramanantsoa, in reply, spoke approvingly of The People's Republic's national unity. He said this had enabled China to evolve according to the principles of Chairman Mao Tse-tung.

    The decision to establish diplomatic links between the two nations was agreed last November, when Malagasy Foreign Minister Didier Ratsiraka visited Peking.
