  • Description

RESCUE WORKERS YESTERDAY ( FRIDAY, FEB. 27TH ) BROKE THROUGH A CAVED-IN RAILWAY TUNNEL NEAR AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, RELEASING SEVEN MINERS TRAPPED FOR THREE DAYS BENEATH TONS OF RUBBLE AND DEBRIS. ONE MAN WAS KILLED OUTRIGHT-THREE OTHERS ARE STILL MISSING.

THE SURVIVORS WERE AMONG TEN MEN WHO WERE WORKING IN A DEEP UNDERGROUND SECTION WHEN PART OF THE FIVE-AND-A-HALF MILE ( 8 KMS ) TUNNEL, WHICH IS BEING BORED THROUGH KAIMAI MOUNTAINS, COLLAPSED SUDDENLY ON TUESDAY ( FEBRUARY 24TH ).

RESCUE TEAMS WERE FIGHTING AGAINST TIME, BECAUSE OF RISING WATER IN THE ROCK FALL AREA. THEY LOCATED THE ENTOMBED MEN AFTER SIX HOURS, AND A STEEL PIPE WAS IMMEDIATELY PUSHED THROUGH THE RUBBLE, ENABLING FOOD AND DRINK TO BE LOWERED.

MORE THAN ONE-HUNDRED FEET OF ROCK AND EARTH HAD TO BE CLEARED, AND RESCUERS WORKED NON-STOP, USING FLOOD LIGHTS BY NIGHT TO GUIDE MASSIVE DRAG LINES WHICH SCOOPED OUT HUGE BUCKETS OF SOIL, DUMPING THEM INTO WAITING TRUCKS.
