  • Description

NEW YORK, JAN. 19 (AP)-ROBERT F. KENNEDY RAISED THE POSSIBILITY TODAY THAT THE U.S. SENATE MAY NOT BE WITHOUT A KENNEDY AGAIN IN THIS CENTURY. HE JOCULARLY PROPOSED HIS 8-DAY-OLD SON, MATTHEW, AS A CANDIDATE FOR 1995.

THE FORMER ATTORNEY GENERAL, HIMSELF A NEWLY ELECTED SENATOR FROM NEW YORK, TOOK HIS WIFE, ETHEL, AND THE NEW BABY HOME FROM ROOSEVELT HOSPITAL. THE CHILD IS THEIR NINTH AND KENNEDY REMARKED:
"TEDDY WAS THE NINTH CHILD IN OUR FAMILY AND HE BECAME A U.S. SENATOR."
AS FOR MATTHEW'S POLITICAL FUTURE IN THE SENATE, THE FATHER SAID:
"IT WOULD BE NICE, BUT IT'S UP TO HIM."
THE PROSPECTIVE CANDIDATE SLEPT THROUGH THE NOMINATING SPEECH, NESTLED IN A WHITE BLANKET IN HIS FATHER'S ARMS.

    MEANWHILE, KENNEDY DECLARED:
"HE'S GOING TO BE A LEADER OF THE ASSEMBLY IN ALBANY. WE FINALLY CAME UP WITH A CANDIDATE."
THE QUIP REFERRED TO BE A BITTER DEADLOCK IN ALBANY OVER THE DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP OF THE STATE ASSEMBLY, WHICH HAS GONE UNRESOLVED FOR TWO WEEKS BECAUSE OF A SPLIT IN PARTY RANKS OVER CANDIDATES.

THE FIRST KENNEDY TO GO TO THE SENATE WAS THE LATE PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY, ELECTED FROM MASSACHUSETTS IN 1952. HIS YOUNGEST BROTHER, EDWARD (TEDDY) KENNEDY, FOLLOWED IN 1962, AND ROBERT KENNEDY WAS SEATED JAN. 4 AFTER HIS ELECTION LAST NOVEMBER IN NEW YORK.

MRS. KENNEDY EMERGED FROM THE HOSPITAL SAYING "WE HOPE TO BE BACK SOON."
NEWSMEN ASKED HER IF SHE PLANNED MORE CHILDREN.

"CHILDREN ARE CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN," SHE REPLIED.

THE NEW BABY, WEIGHING SEVEN POUNDS, EIGHT OUNCES, WAS CHRISTENED SUNDAY AT ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL AS MATTHEW MAXWELL TAYLOR KENNEDY. THE MIDDLE NAMES ARE FOR A CLOSE FAMILY FRIEND, THE U.S. AMBASSADOR TO VIETNAM.

MRS. KENNEDY SAID SHE AND HER HUSBAND RECEIVED A "MARVELLOUS TELEGRAM" FROM AMBASSADOR TAYLOR, IN WHICH HE SAID HE WAS HONOURED BY THE DISTINCTION AND IN ORDER TO LIVE UP TO IT "HE'D HAVE TO CHANGE HIS WAYS."
KENNEDY, HIS WIFE AND NEW CHILD HEADED DIRECTLY FOR LA GUARDIA AIRPORT. THERE KENNEDY BOARDED A PLANE FOR WASHINGTON TO ATTEND TOMORROW'S INAUGURAL OF PRESIDENT JOHNSON. MRS. KENNEDY WILL NOT ATTEND.
