  • Description

For the second time Kurao Hiroshima, 30, of Japan won the 13th Asahi International Marathon at Fukuoka Kyushu Island, Nov 8, defeating the Czech favourite and national champion Pavel Kantorek by about 200 meters.

Hiroshima's winning time in the gruelling 42 kilometre race held in sultry conditions: 2 hours 29 minutes, 34 seconds. His 1957 win was in the record time of 2,21,40. In maintaining his 120-metre lead from the 35th kilometre mark, Hiroshima virtually assured himself a place in Japan's 1960 Olympic team.

Sixty-five runners, including five foreign runners competed in the marathon. Kantorek, 30, was timed at 2,30,48. Nobuyoshi Sadanaga, Japan, last year's winner, was third in 2,31,37.

Fred Norris, Britain, a pre-race favourite, led the field until shortly before reaching the midway point. The sultry conditions handicapped his performance, and he came in 26th in 2,50,2. Geoffrey Watt, Australia, was 35th in 3,02,55.
