  • Description

MOUNTED POLICE TODAY (SUNDAY) CLASHED WITH 3,000 DEMONSTRATORS WHO HURLED BOTTLES, BRICKS AND COINS WHEN THEY ATTACKED RHODESIA HOUSE IN LONDON. SEVENTEEN POLICEMEN WERE INJURED, FOUR OF THEM SERIOUSLY, AND 31 DEMONSTRATORS ARRESTED. THE VIOLENCE CAME TOWARDS THE END OF A MARCH BY THOUSANDS OF IMMIGRANTS, STUDENTS, AND OTHER PEOPLE PROTESTING AGAINST ALLEGED RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN BRITAIN, APARTHEID IN SOUTH AFRICA, AND IAN SMITH'S WHITE MINORITY RULE IN RHODESIA.

THE MARCHERS, WHO HAD GATHERED AT SPEAKERS CORNER IN HYDE PARK, STORMED TOWARDS RHODESIA HOUSE WHERE MORE THAN 500 POLICE WAITED FOR THEM. THE POLICE LINES HELD FIRM, EXCEPT FOR ONE UNEASY MOMENT, AS WAVE AFTER WAVE OF DEMONSTRATORS PUSHED TOWARDS THEM. THEY SHOUTED "HAND IAN SMITH". ONLY ONE HUNDRED YARDS AWAY (91 METRES) ANOTHER LARGE GROUP OF DEMONSTRATORS WHO URGED AN END TO COLOURED IMMIGRATION INTO BRITAIN, WERE REPELLED BY MORE POLICE.

AFTER FAILING TO FORGE THEIR WAY THROUGH A DOUBLE CORDON OF MOUNTED POLICE FLUNG AROUND THE RHODESIAN MISSION AND PUSHED BACK ACROSS THE STRAND, MANY DEMONSTRATORS RAN DOWN TO SOUTH AFRICA HOUSE IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE.

THERE THEY USED BRICKS, RUBBISH BINS AND UMBRELLAS IN AN EFFORT TO FORCE THEIR WAY INTO A LOCKED BUILDING. MORE THAN 50 WINDOWS IN THE BUILDING WERE SMASHED. SOME DEMONSTRATORS TRIED TO GET THROUGH A SIDE DOOR BUT WERE FOILED BY AN INSIDE BARRICADE.

THE IMMIGRANTS' MARCH WAS ORGANISED BY THE BLACK PEOPLES ALLIANCE. BEHIND THEM WERE ABOUT 1,000 DEMONSTRATORS WHO OPPOSED THE SMITH REGIME AND WERE INTENT ON OCCUPYING RHODESIA HOUSE. THEY PEELED OFF FROM THE IMMIGRANTS WHOSE PROTEST PARADE WAS AGAINST THEIR LIVING CONDITIONS.

MOST OF THE DEMONSTRATORS HEADED DOWN WHITEHALL TO WATCH A DEPUTATION HAND IN A PETITION AT BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, HAROLD WILSON'S HOME AT NUMBER 10 DOWNING STREET. THEN THEY DOUBLED BACK TO RHODESIA HOUSE.

ABOVE THEM, TWO CLIMBERS WHO HAD HOISTED THE UNION JACK ATOP THE BUILDING WHERE THE RHODESIAN FLAG WAS FLOWN LAST WEEK, STILL CLUNG TO THE FLAGPOLE TO WHICH THEY TIED THEMSELVES AT MIDNIGHT (11 JANUARY).

THEY CLIMBED DOWN DURING THE HEAT OF THE BATTLE AFTER SITTING ASTRIDE THE POLE 100 FEET (30 METRES) ABOVE STREET LEVEL FOR 18 HOURS AND DEFYING ALL POLICE EFFORTS TO DISLODGE THEM.
