  • Description

Moslems in Dahomey celebrated the Feast of Tabaski last Tuesday (24 December) in the West African republic's principal city of Cotonou. The feast of Tabaski -- or Id Al-Kabir -- is one of the two main religious occasions in the Islamic calender -- the other being Ramadan -- and it was observed throughout the Moslem world.

The feast is traditionally observed on the tenth day of the last month of the Moslem year. The accompanying festival -- symbolising the sacrificial offer by Abraham of his son, Isaac -- takes place on the day after the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. It lasts for three days.

During the feast, the Imam (priest) led the Moslems in prayer, and during the festival -- following tradition -- the Moslems wore new clothes, visited friends and exchanged gifts.

Dignitaries at this year's feast ceremony -- which was highlighted by the traditional sacrifice of a ram -- included Dahomey's Minister of Agriculture, Djibril Moriba, who represented the President.

SYNOPSIS: The Imam led the traditional celebration of the Feast of Tabaski last Tuesday (24 December) in the Dahomey Republic's chief city of Cotonou.

The Feast of Tabaski -- or Id Al-Kabir -- is one of the two main religious celebrations in the Islamic calendar. Like the other, Ramadan, it is observed throughout the Moslem world.

The feast is celebrated on the tenth day of the last month of the Moslem year and is highlighted by the sacrificial slaughter of a ram. This ritual, like the accompanying three-day festival, symbolises the sacrificial offer by Abraham of his son, Isaac. During the festival -- which begins on the day after the annual pilgrimage to Mecca -- the Moslems followed the tradition of wearing new clothes, visiting friends and exchanging gifts.
