Belgium's young King Baudouin, be spectacled and smiling, received full U.S. honours May 11 in Washington: President Eisenhower made the trip to the airport to greet the 28-year-old King.
A 21-gun salute, military bands and an honour guard and children waving Belgian flags greeted him.
The King said Belgians were indebted to the United States for assistance in their hour of peril.
The King rode beside the President in a limousine at the head of a welcome parade from the airport. Thousands lined the streets in warm sunshine to applaud them.
The King's visit - for 20 days - is the first official visit by a Belgian monarch in 40 years. Baudouin had been there before during the war as a private citizen.
