Background: Twelve Russian whaling ships and their parent factory ship "Soviet Ukraine", returning from 7 months in Antarctic waters, anchored at Gibraltar, May 14. The fleet's complement included 40 women-nurses, accountants, bakers, cooks, and stewards.
Soviet crew members, in civilian dress, have been making the rounds of Gibraltar stores, purchasing freely, with special tastes for brocaded velvet cloths, clocks, and fancy goods. Their purchases are estimated at GBP15,000. The most unusual buy was by the fleet commander, Hero of Socialist Labour, Captain solyanik. He bought one of the Apes for which Gibraltar's rock has long been famous.
The Russian ships stopped at Gibraltar - last port of call before their home port Odessa - for supplies, and to repaint. They will want to present a good appearance on their return from a successful seven month's season.
