  • Description

PRESIDENT KENNETH KAUNDA WAS BACK IN ZAMBIA YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) FROM THE AFRICAN SUMMIT CONFERENCE IN ACCRA TO JOIN HIS PEOPLE IN CELEBRATING THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF ZAMBIA'S INDEPENDENCE. IT WAS A BUSY DAY, STARTING WITH A FOUNDATION STONE LAYING CEREMONY AT THE SITE OF THE NEW LUSAKA AIRPORT. THEN HE WENT TO A NEARBY CO-OPERATIVE FARM AND MOUNTED A TRACTOR TO DO SOME PLOUGHING.

LUSAKA'S NEW INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PROGRAMME IS ONE OF THE MAJOR ENGINEERING PROJECTS UNDER-WAY IN AFRICA AT THE MOMENT. IT IS COSTING FIVE MILLION POUNDS STERLING. THE LAYING OF THE FOUNDATION STONE WAS THE FIRST CEREMONY IN A DAY OF CELEBRATIONS IN ZAMBIA MARKING INDEPENDENCE DAY.

THOUGH GOVERNMENT ORGANISERS HOPE THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE WILL ENJOY THE INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS, THE KEYNOTE OF THE FESTIVITIES IS "A SENSE OF REDEDICATION, HARD WORK AND SOBRIETY."
DR. KENNETH KAUNDA AND OTHER CABINET MINISTERS SPENT MUCH OF THE MORNING AT CO-OPERATIVE FARMS AROUND THE COUNTRY JOINING IN THE WORK OF PLOUGHING. DR KAUNDA WENT TO TUBALANGE CO-OPERATIVE FARM AT FERN GROVE JUST OUTSIDE LUSAKA. WITH HIM WAS HIS VICE-PRESIDENT, MR REUBEN KAMANGA.

THE DAY'S FESTIVITIES WERE HIGHLIGHTED BY A GIANT RALLY IN LUSAKA, ADDRESSED BY THE PRESIDENT. HE TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW FOREIGN AFFAIRS. HE DEVOTED PART OF HIS SPEECH TO A REVIEW OF THE RHODESIAN SITUATION. DR. KAUNDA SAID THIS SITUATION HAD ARISEN BECAUSE "SOME OF OUR FELLOW MEN HAVE CHOSEN TO BUILD THEIR SOCIETIES ON FALSE FOUNDATIONS OF RACE SUPERIORITY." HE SAID THAT ZAMBIA DISAGREED "VEHEMENTLY" TO THIS APPROACH TO LIFE. HE SAW BRITISH ACTION AS THE ONLY ACTION THAT COULD BE TAKEN WITHOUT RISKING MUCH WIDER CONFLICT. FINALLY, DR. KAUNDA URGED MR SMITH, THE RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, TO JOIN IN TALKS "AROUND A CONSTITUTIONAL CONFERENCE TABLE."
TODAY (SUNDAY) IS THE ACTUAL ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE -- AND THERE WILL BE MORE CEREMONIES IN LUSAKA -- INCLUDING MILITARY PARADES, FOOTBALL MATCHES -- AND ROCK AND ROLL DANCES.
