SPEECH TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2, 3, 5: KYPRIANOU: "Mr. Chairman, I wish to welcome to Cyprus all the participants to this extraordinary meeting of the co-ordinating bureau of the non-aligned. Since its inception, when a group of great leaders -- Tito, Nasser, Naru and our Archbishop Makarios laid down the foundations, this great movement has been playing a very important role in world affairs. We have always believed in the need for concerted action on the part of the non-aligned, so as to make its role as effective as possible, and most definitely the reason for the holding of the present meeting requires concerted and urgent action."

Background: A special meeting of the non-aligned movement was held in Cyprus July 15 on the Lebanon crisis. Foreign ministers from the member Arab states were welcomed to the conference in Nicosia by the President of Cyprus, Spyros Kyprianou. President Kyprianou spoke of the need for concerted and urgent action to resolve the Lebanon situation. He told delegates the non-aligned movement was formed by great leaders to play an important part in world affairs, and now more than ever they must fulfil that role. The other problem facing the foreign ministers was the renewed fighting between the gulf states of Iran and Iraq. On July 16, the Iranian foreign minister told the meeting he would not discuss the gulf war with his Iraqi counterpart at the conference.
