Background: In Northern Thailand, the army has mounted a big operation to flush out the increasing number of Communist guerillas whose activities are causing growing concern to the military regime in Bangkok.

The offensive is spread over a wide area embracing three provinces - on film, the Petchabun area, about 400 kilometres north of Bangkok.

Thai troops, supported by armour and air strikes, are moving through a hilly region covered in a mixture of jungle and scrub. Up to 600 guerillas are reported to be in the area.

The insurgents are believed to be Meo tribesmen, many of whom have been trained in China and North Vietnam. So have they have largely avoided any contacts with their numerically-superior hunters.

Their activity to date has been mostly hid-and-run efforts - threatening government patrols, police stations and road-building crews. But Thai military leaders fear this might be just the start of some thing far more serious.
