  • Description

Gabon's President Albert Bernard Bongo shortened a luncheon date with French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing in Paris on Wednesday (11 February) to hold a news conference and tell reporters that his country would recognise the MPLA as the legitimate government of Angola.

The decision means Gabon will be the 28th member of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to acknowledge the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

President Bongo said he has given his government instructions to formally approach the MPLA administration in Angola.

Observers now believe several other French-speaking African countries will also recognise the MPLA Government within the next few days.

Their belief is based on the OAU's decision, announced on Wednesday, to accept the MPLA as the Angolan leadership.

President Bongo is in France for a two week private visit. He is accompanied by Prime Minister Leon Mebiame and several senior Government officials and has no plans to return home and implement the recognition move.

He said, "During the last Government meeting before I left Gabon, we reviewed the Angolan problem and the Political Bureau was asked whether we could make a decision about it".

"After thinking it over from Saturday until yesterday, I have sent instructions to Libreville for Gabon to recognise President Neto's regime.
