  • Description

The Royal capital of Laos, Luang Prabang, on the bank of the Mekong River and nestling against tropical mountain, is peaceful despite the fact that it is surrounded by Pathet Lao forces, and its road link to the administrative capital of Vientiane is cut off.

Luang Prabang, 250 miles north of Vientiane, is the oldest capital in Laos, and has been the seat of Laotian kings for centuries. It is even now the town in which King Sri Savang Vatthens normally lives.

The town-like capital is also the religious centre, and abounds in famous buddhist temples. It is dominated by yellow robed monks. The craftsmen of the artistic place like nothing better than making images of Buddha in bronze and precious metals. Silver and gold are their favourites for ornaments and even for the cloth that their women wear.

Hinayana Buddhism, the purer form of the teachings of Buddha that is found in Ceylon, Burma and Cambodia, is the official and most practised religion in Laos. Laotian culture and art, like its religion, is influenced by India.

The non-killing and brotherhood aspects of buddhism are so much a part of a Laotian that even for the soldiers of Laos fighting does not come naturally. And Laotians have a knack of being at peace with themselves when the whole world is worried over their country and the fighting that is going there.
