  • Description

The final session of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress unamiously adopted a resolution to remove Foreign Minister Chiao Kuan-hua and replace him with veteran diplomat Huang Hua.

SYNOPSIS: The final session of the congress took place in Peking on Friday (2 December). It was attended by new party Chairman Hua Kuo-feng, Vice-Premier Li Hsien-nien and the widow of former Premier Chou En-lai.

Reuters report that Mr. Chiao was believed to have been under attack for some time for being influenced by the purged radical "gang of four" led by the late Chairman Mao's widow Chiang Ching.

Reference to this group was made at the congress by the congress vice-chairman Ulanfu. He said now that the radicals had been ousted the country was more able "to firmly implement Chairman Mao's revolutionary line in politics and foreign affairs."
However, diplomatic observers in Peking were quick to point out that the change in foreign ministers didn't necessarily mean a change in foreign policy. They described it as changing one experienced man for another.
