  • Description

British troops were put on a 'state red' alert in Aden today (Friday) as the protectorate came almost to a standstill during a forty-eight hour general strike. A 'state red' alert is the maximum emergency alert.

There were a number of minor incidents reported during the day, but British authorities reported there were no casualties among British forces.

In the Crater area only one incident was reported - an Arab found tampering with a military vehicle was shot in the shoulder.

Security precautions in the Crater district were stringent. Armoured vehicles patrolled the streets and troops maintained positions behind barricades at strategic points in the town.

On Wednesday, the British High Commissioner, Sir Humphrey Trevelyan toured the Steamer Point dock area, visiting places where during the past three weeks two Britons have been shot, one fatally in attacks by Arab nationalists.

The High Commissioner ignored the risks of an attack against himself, although during his visit he was accompanied by a heavily armed escort of British troops.
