Background: The president of the Khmer Republic, Marshall Lon Nol, on Saturday (30 November) repeated his call for peace negotiations with rival forces led by Prince Norodom Sihanouk.
In his first statement since his delegation retained its seat in the United Nations on Thursday (28 November) by a slim two vote majority, President Lon Nol said his government was ready to discuss all questions which divided the two sides.
he reiterated his offer of unconditional peace talks to Prince Sihanouk's group -- first made on 9 July this year.
President Lon Nol said the United Nations resolution not to replace his government with Prince Sihanouk's faction, would help protect other UN members in future, should their right to govern be challenged by government-in-exile.
Prince Sihanouk's Government-in-Exile is based in Peking.
President Lon Nol also said UN Secretary-General Dr. Kurt Waldheim was invited to visit Phnom Penh, where he would receive every assistance needed to assess the situation in the country.
