    SYNOPSIS: On this departure from the Ivory coast on Thursday after his forty eight hour visit for talks with President Houphouet-Boigny, the West German Foreign Minister, Herr Walter Scheel spoke in French at an airport press conference.

    Herr Scheel said that economics provided the main basis of the talks between himself and the President. He said that they had detailed discussions on the relations between the European Common Market countries and Africa, particularly the Ivory Coast. He explained that both he and the President were pleased at the growth in commercial exchanges, with the Ivory Coast representing for West Germany a very favourable trade balance of three to one. The Federal Republic of Germany, the Foreign Minister pointed out, have no objection to that situation. The present trends in global trade, he said, augments for more. Herr Scheel said that the President had expressed his appreciation for the West German aid to the development of the Ivory Coast. West Germany provides 38 per cent of the European Development Fund. But on top of that, he said, his country was going to provide more through the two countries' bilateral agreements. West Germany would continue to co-operate closely in the economic future and social developments of the Ivory Coast. During his forty eight hour stay in the Ivory Coast, Herr-Scheel had also met the Foreign Minister, Mr. Arsene Usher, and the Economy and Finance Minster Mr. Henri Bede. For trade purposes, West Germany is the Ivory Coast's third best customer, after France and this United States.
