  • Description

In Poland, an international congress on alcoholism and drug dependence opened on Sunday (3 September). It is the first meeting of its kind ever to be held in a Communist country.

SYNOPSIS: Venue for the unprecedented conference was the Palace of Culture an Science in Warsaw. Despite the reluctance of Communist governments to publish full statistics, it is clear that the amount of alcohol consumed in eastern Europe has doubled over the past 15 years. About 800 delegates, from both Eastern and Western countries, tackled the problems of alcoholism. Many delegates felt that the choice of Warsaw as congress venue was not accidental. Poles not only outdrink their neighbours in eastern Europe, but they top the world league in consumption of spirits per head of the population.

This is causing the Warsaw government concern and the polish Minister of Health and Social Security, Professor Marian Sliwinsky, officially opened the congress. Poland has almost two million alcoholics out of a population of 34 million. According to the weekly Warsaw magazine, Czas, drink is the cause of nearly 60 per cent of Poland's murders and 85 per cent of its divorces.
