Background: At Dachau, in West Germany, a Protestant Chapel was inaugurated yesterday (Sunday) in the former Nazi concentration camp -- one of the most notorious. The key of the new chapel was handed over by the Chairman of the Evangelical Church Convent in Germany, Dr. Kurt Scharf, to the Protestant leader in Bavaria, Dr Herman Dietzfelbinger.
Dr Scharf received the key of the new chapel from the engineer in charge of its construction before handing it over to Dr. Dietzfelbinger. The chapel has been built through the collaboration of the many Dachau Committees throughout the world, and joins a Roman Catholic Church and a Jewish Synagogue on the site. All are financed internationally with the co-operation of the German Evangelical Church.
The Archbishop of York and Canterbury have both sent personal gifts to the new chapel.
