Background: Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia left Kenya on Wednesday (June 12) after a five-day official visit. During the visit a boundary agreement was signed after seven years of negotiations between the two countries.
Before the Emperor left, President Jomo Kenyatta presented him with the Chief Order of Golden Hart of Kenya -- the highest Kenya award.
The agreement signed on Tuesday (June 11), formally entitled "The Kenya-Ethiopia Boundary Commission 1970" was regarded by both leaders as historic and as marking a permanent frontier between the two countries. In the past there have been dispute involving tribesmen from both countries resulting sometimes in loss of life and theft of livestock.
The visit to Kenya was the last stop in a five-nation tour by the Emperor, which has taken three weeks. The Emperor has met the leaders of Japan, Soviet Union, France, United Arab Republic as well as President Kenyatta of Kenya.
