  • Description

ABOUT 800 WEST BERLIN LEFT-WING STUDENTS STAGED A SIT-DOWN STRIKE AT A RAILWAY STATION IN EAST GERMANY TODAY TO DISCUSS HOW TO HELP FRENCH STUDENTS. THE WEST BERLINERS WERE RETURNING FROM ANTI-GOVERNMENT DEMONSTRATIONS IN BONN WHEN THEY LEFT THEIR TRAIN AT GRIEBNITZSEE.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE STUDENTS TOLD BAFFLED EAST GERMAN BORDER GUARDS THAT THE TRAIN MIGHT BE DELAYED. THE STUDENTS HAD EARLIER ELECTED A SPEAKER FOR EACH COMPARTMENT ON THEIR SPECIAL EAST GERMAN TRAIN TO FORM A PARLIAMENT, BUT THEY SPLIT ON A MOVE TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKES AT A WEST BERLIN STATION AND MARCH TO THE FRENCH CONSULATE IN WEST BERLIN.

THEY MARCHED OUT OF THE TRAIN WHEN IT PULLED INTO GRIEBNITZSEE, WHICH IS THE LAST STATION IN EAST GERMANY BEFORE WEST BERLIN. FOR HALF AN HOUR THE STUDENTS SAT ON THE PLATFORM, DISCUSSING WHETHER OR NOT TO MARCH ON THE FRENCH CONSULATE TO EXPRESS THEIR SOLIDARITY WITH RIOTING STUDENTS IN PARIS, BUT THE MAJORITY VOTE WAS AGAINST ANY IMMEDIATE ACTION.

THEN THE STUDENTS ROLLED UP THEIR RED FLAGS, TROOPED BACK ONTO THE TRAIN, AND WERE TAKEN NON-STOP THROUGH WEST BERLIN TO EAST BERLIN'S FRIEDRICHSTRASSE STATION.
