Background: Belgian paratroopers took part in exercises near Leopoldville, december 7, in preparation for possible emergencies during the forthcoming elections in the Belgian Congo.
Eighty men - part of the Belgian Expeditionary Corps stationed in Kamina, Southern Congo, and in Kitona near Leopoldville - jumped from two transport aircraft during the exercise.
While Belgian troops continued their training in the Congo, the Colonial Army moved into the African section of Luluabourg, December 8, using tear-gas bombs to halt inter-tribal warfare between Lulua and Baluba bands. Dozens of Africans were disarmed, and their spears, machetes and home-made muzzle-loaders confiscated, after 15 Africans had been killed during clashes. The state of emergency was extended to outlying districts.
