  • Description

MR. WINSTON FIELD, THE PRIME MINISTER OF SOUTHERN RHODESIA, SPENT 7-HOURS IN CLOSED SESSION WITH HIS CABINET YESTERDAY, (WEDNESDAY), REPORTING ON HIS TALKS IN LONDON FOR INDEPENDENCE FOR THE COLONY. THE MEETING WAS HELD AMID A GROWING ATMOSPHERE OF RESTIVENESS IN SOUTHERN RHODESIA, WHERE ELEMENTS OF THE ALL-WHITE GOVERNMENT HAVE BEEN URGING INDEPENDENCE.

KEY ISSUES DEBATED DURING THE CABINET MEETING WERE BRITISH DEMANDS FOR A CHANGE IN THE FRANCHISE WHICH WOULD GIVE NATIVE AFRICANS A GREATER REPRESENTATION. RECENTLY, RIGHT-WING ELEMENTS IN THE GOVERNMENT HAVE CALLED FOR A REJECTION OF THE BRITISH REQUESTS AND A DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF GREAT BRITAIN.

IT WAS REPORTED AFTERWARDS, THAT MR. FIELD, DURING THE MARATHON MEETING, HAD URGED RESTRAINT AMONGST HIS CABINET COLLEAGUES AND ASKED THEM TO EXPLORE EVERY POSSIBLE COURSE TO SOLVE THE COUNTRY'S INDEPENDENCE ISSUE WITHOUT RECOURSE TO UNILATERAL ACTION OR VIOLENCE.
