  • Description

RACING DRIVERS THIS WEEKEND ARE WARMING UP FOR THE LE MANS 24-HOUR ENDURANCE, TO BE HELD ON JUNE 20-21. THE FAMOUS FRENCH CIRCUIT HAS BEEN THROWN OPEN TO ALLOW THE PRACTICE.

THE AMERICAN FORD GROUP IS MAKING A BIG CHALLENGE FOR HONOURS THIS YEAR WITH ITS FORD GT, A 200 MILES (320 KMS) AN HOUR RACER APPEARING IN PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME.

IN YESTERDAY'S SESSION, IT (No. 10) WAS DRIVEN BY BRITAIN'S ROY SALVADORI. A SECOND FORD GT ALSO HAS BEEN ENTERED -- TO BE DRIVEN BY NEW ZEALAND'S BRUCE McLAREN.

CAR No. 17 IS AN ITALIAN FERRARI, TO BE DRIVEN BY BRITAIN'S JOHN SURTEES. No. 18 IS ANOTHER FERRARI. THIS YEAR COULD BE THE FERRARI COMPANY'S NEXT TO LAST PARTICIPATION IN THE CLASSIC, FOR THE COMPANY IS REPORTED TO BE ABANDONING MOTOR-RACING AT THE END OF NEXT YEAR.

BRITAIN'S SUNBEAM ALPINE TIGER (No. 7) IS ANOTHER CAR MAKING ITS FIRST APPEARANCE. THE TIGER'S TOP SPEED IS PUT AT MORE THAN 150 MILES (240 KMS) AN HOUR.

YESTERDAY'S PRACTICE WAS MARRED BY THE CRASH OF A NEW FERRARI DRIVEN BY ITALY'S CARL ABARTE, WHO WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL WITH FACE INJURIES.

LATER CAME BETTER NEWS FOR THE FERRARI COMPANY. ONE OF THEIR OFFICIAL ENTRIES, DRIVEN BY SCARFIOTTI, SET UP A NEW LAP. RECORD OF 133.4 MILES (214.4 KMS) AN HOUR, ALMOST ONE MILE (1.6 KMS) AN HOUR BETTER THAN JOHN SURTEES' OLD RECORD.
