  • Description

Iraq's diplomatic offensive, which received new impetus following the end of the Kurdish rebellion earlier this year, continued last week with important talks involving two visiting leaders to Baghdad.

President Mohamed Siad Barre of Somalia was in Baghdad on Wednesday (6 May) as part of his five-nation Arab tour. One of President Barre's chief objectives during the trip is to persuade Arab leaders to hold their next summit meeting in Mogadishu.

But during two hours of talks with Iraqi President Hassan Al-Bakr, bilateral relations and methods of developing them were an important item on the agenda.

Another visitor to Baghdad's Presidential Palace on Wednesday was Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, the Saudi Oil Minister. Relations between the two countries, long strained, have recently been patched up -- helped by the signing of a new agreement on the demarcation of the neutral zone lying along their border.
