    THE FUNERAL WAS HELD IN PARIS TODAY (21 OCTOBER) OF FATHER DAMIEN BOULOGNE, WHO BECAME THE WORLD'S LONGEST-SURVIVING HEART-TRANSPLANT PATIENT LAST AUGUST WHEN SOUTH AFRICAN DENTIST PHILIP BLAIBERG DIED IN CAPE TOWN. FATHER BOULOGNE, WHO WAS 58, DIED IN A PARIS HOSPITAL ON SATURDAY (18 OCTOBER).

    THE OBSEQUIES WERE SAID AT THE DOMINICAN CHAPEL IN THE RUE FU FAUBOURG-ST.-HONORE TO WHICH THE FATHER BELONGED AND HE WAS LATER BURIED AT THE MONTPARNASSE CEMETERY.

    FATHER BOULOGNE RECEIVED THE HEART OF CUSTOMS-OFFICER JEAN CLAUDE GAUGIRAND AT BROUSSAIS HOSPITAL IN PARIS ON 12 MAY 1968. HE SUFFERED TWO REJECTION CRISES BUT LAST AUGUST HIS DOCTORS SAID THAT THEY DID NOT FORESEE ANY MORE IN HIS CASE.

    THERE WAS NO ADVANCE SIGN OF AN UNEXPECTED CRISIS WHEN FATHER BOULOGNE DIED SUDDENLY ON SATURDAY NIGHT. HE HAD BEEN HOPING TO BE ABLE TO GET BACK TO WORK AND TO TRAVEL IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

    HE WAS THE SECOND HEART-TRANSPLANT PATIENT TO DIE WITHIN 24 HOURS -- BRAZIL'S ONLY SURVIVOR, HUGU ORLANDI, 43, HAD EARLIER DIED IN HOSPITAL IN SAO PAULO.

    FATHER BOULOGNE GAVE SEVERAL RADIO TALKS AFTER HIS OPERATION, AND THE FOURTH OF THESE, RECORDED ONLY A FEW DAYS BEFORE HIS DEATH AND TITLED 'REPLY TO DESPAIR', WAS BROADCAST LAST MONDAY (20 OCTOBER).
