Background: The Indonesian Government has released a film showing the uncovering of mass graves of bodies of what it claims are victims of atrocities by left-wing Fretilin troops in East Timor.

The Indonesians say there is evidence that the people had been tortured before being apparently buried alive. Most of the bodies were bound.

Scores of bodies, said to be Timorese villagers and pro-Indonesian troops, were unearthed from the graves in mountain villages areas near the timor capital, Dili.

The film was released by the Indonesian embassy in Canberra, Australia.

Fretilin briefly took over east Timor, as former Portuguese colony after defeating right-wing and pro-Indonesian factions. Indonesia later sent in troops, labelled as volunteers, to support the right-wing elements. East timor is now effectively under Indonesian control.

Both Fretilin and Indonesia have accused each other of committing atrocities.

Meanwhile 27 delegates from Timorese regions, will meet in Dili on Tuesday June 1 to decide whether Timor will officially become part of Indonesia.

Indonesia already administers the western half of Timor.
