Background: Medical units throughout Israel were alerted following confirmation on Friday afternoon (21 AUG) of a cholera case in an Arab refugee camp near Anata ... north - east of Jerusalem. It was the first case reported in Israel or the occupied territories.
The camp has been quarantined and an improvised roadblock set up on the approach road. Health authorities inoculated the 5,000 refugee residents, and the Augusta Victoria Hospital... where the 30-year-old woman victim was taken... was also place under quarantine. Since her admission to the hospital the woman has shown signs of improvement. Anata is the reputed birthplace of the prophet Jeremiah.
Although duty police have been inoculated, there will be no similar requirement for the general public as the Israeli medical authorities believe the vaccine not wholly efficient.
The World Health Organisation in Geneva is sending more medical teams into the Middle-East to help deal with the current outbreak of cholera which is sweeping westwards from India.
