Background: Alfredo Escalera of Puerto Rico retained his World Boxing Council junior lightweight title on Thursday (1 July) with a points decision over Japanese challenger, "Buzz-saw" Yamabe.
SYNOPSIS: In the early rounds it was a hard fought contest with the fighters apparently evenly matched. They stood in the centre of the ring and exchanged toe-to-toe blows to the head and body. But as the match progressed, it became obvious it was Escalera, wearing the white trunks, who was forcing the pace and style of the fight. Yamabe continually tried to break under escalera's guard but the Puerto Rican's agility and advantage of reach ensured the fight went his way. He frequently pounded Yamabe with combination punches to the head and body.
For most of the fight, the boxing was at close quarters with Escalera not taking the full advantage of his longer reach. Both fighters weighed in at the junior lightweight limit of 130 pounds (approximately 59 kilos) and had met once before, exactly three months ago. In that bout, Escalera was awarded a controversial knockout decision and a rematch was arranged almost immediately.
It was a non title fight and this match was Yamabe's first attempt at the title. He is now ranked fourth in the world in the junior lightweight division.
Although he was obviously outclassed, Yamabe kept trying to fight his way back into contention right up to the end of the bout.
The points decision in favour of Escalera was unanimous. By the end of the fight both boxers had suffered injures. Yamabe was bleeding from the nose and Escalera was badly cut over his left eye.
