  • Description

CONCERN IS MOUNTING THAT COMMUNICATION LINKS BETWEEN ZAMBIA'S VITAL COPPERBELT AREA AND THE REST OF THE COUNTRY MAY BE SEVERED AS TORRENTIAL RAINS CONTINUE TO FALL, THREATENING TO CLOSE THE LUSAKA-COPPERBELT ROAD AND NDOLA AIRPORT. ALREADY 62 INCHES (157 CM APPROX) OF RAIN HAS FALLEN, AGAINST AN ANNUAL AVERAGE FOR THE AREA OF 40 INCHES (102 CM APPROX), AND THE RAINS ARE CONTINUING.

THE UNUSUALLY HEAVY RAINS HAVE OPENED UP POTHOLES IN THE LUSAKA-COPPERBELT ROAD -- THE ONLY ROAD LINK BETWEEN THE CAPITAL AND THE INDUSTRIAL NORTH OF THE COUNTRY -- AND ALONG ONE SECTION THE ROAD IS NOW PITTED WITH HOLES FOR 40 MILES (64 KM APPROX). SEVERE FLOODING IS PROVING AN ADDITIONAL HAZARD, AND IN MANY AREAS THE ROAD IS IMPASSABLE TO LIGHT TRAFFIC.

PLANS WERE BEING LAID TO AIR-LIFT ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES INTO THE COPPERBELT AREA, BUT NOW AN ADDITIONAL HAZARD FACES THE INDUSTRIAL AREA. NDOLA AIRPORT, THE SOLE REMAINING LINK WITH THE REST OF THE COUNTRY AND THE OUTLET FOR MUCH OF THE AREA'S PRODUCE FOR OVERSEAS, IS NOW FACED WITH CLOSURE AS THE RAINS INCREASINGLY DAMAGE THE RUNWAYS. IF THE RAINS CONTINUE, ALL BUT THE LIGHTEST AIRCRAFT MAY BE GROUNDED.
