  • Description

Iran's post revolutionary rulers are cracking down on drugs. The army recently burnt truckloads of drugs in Teheran. Over the past few years Iran has been involved in the shipping of drugs, mostly opiates, to Europe.

SYNOPSIS: The drugs were brought out to public view under army supervision, and the army were making sure that none escaped the bonfire. Last year it was reported that up to a quarter of all heroin recovered in Europe originated in the Middle East. Although European police seized twenty per cent less heroin in 1978 than in the year before -- a fact attributed to a crackdown on drugs from the so-called Golden Triangle of Indochina -- the police say countries like Afghanistan, pakistan and Iran are becoming central to increased supplies from the Middle East.

Interpol believes that operations against the Golden Triangle have reduced the amount of heroin reaching Europe, but they say the Middle East could step into the resulting vacuum.

Interpol say there's been a number of laboratories in Iran for converting opium into heroin, but they admit that they are not sure where the initial opium poppy is being grown.

A similar crackdown on alcohol in Iran has recently led to violent protests. About 2,000 people, protesting against the public flogging of five men for drinking, stoned the homes of two clergymen and injured a local official.
