  • Description

At a conference in the Senegal capital of Dakar early this week (26 July) Senegal, Morocco and Ivory Coast decided to delay work on a telecommunications' link-up between their countries until they have thoroughly examined the technical and financial implications of Mauritania joining the project.
SYNOPSIS: The plan to link Casablanca, Dakar and Abidjan, the countries' three capitals, by underground telecommunications cables was implemented in 1963. The telecommunications tower in Dakar is partially completed in readiness for the project becoming operational. Most communication come through France and the French are closely involved in assisting North West Africa to become independent in the field of telecommunications.
France was represented at the Dakar talks by Monsieur Norbert Segard and Morocco by its Minister of Posts and Telegraphs, General Idriss Ben Amar el-Alamy. At the end of August France will send a cable ship into the Atlantic Ocean to survey the area where the proposed telecommunications cable will lay off the coasts of Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Ivory Coast.
A delegation from Mauritania was also involved in the discussions. If the existing problems can be overcome successfully Mauritania's capital, Nouackchott will be included in the link up, forging closer links with its natural neighbours. The conference was chaired by Senegal's Minister for Information and Telecommunications, M. Daouda Sow.
