  • Description

The Greek President and the Premier took part in an Easter egg-cracking ritual on Easter Sunday (14 April), traditionally used by Greek monarchs to gauge their popularity with the military.

The Greek President, General Phaedon Gizikis and Premier Adamandios Androutsopoulos smashed eggs with soldiers from the Greek Marines Regiment in Athens. The Chief of the Greek Armed Forces, General Bonanos, also joined in.

Later President Gizikis went on to Tatoi Air Base to crack more eggs, this time with men of the Greek Air Force and the Parachutists Regiment.

In the course of the day the President and the Premier managed to visit most of the units stationed round the capital, and to judge from appearances, the ritual augured well for them. Tradition also decrees that the owner of the egg that does not break on impact will have good luck.

The commander of the military police, Brigadier General Demetries Ioannides who masterminded last November's coup against the deposed President Papadopoulos, also called at barracks in the city to crack eggs with the men.
