    FIREMEN IN VIENNA TODAY (TUESDAY) FOUGHT FOR 90 MINUTES TO LOCALISE A FIRE CAUSED BY PETROL BOMBS IN THE CANADIAN EMBASSY, KILLING TWO PEOPLE. TWO BOMBS WERE THROWN THROUGH THE ENTRANCE OF THE EMBASSY, INSIDE A FIVE-STOREY BUILDINGS NEAR THE CITY CENTRE OVERLOOKING THE DANUBE CANAL. AT LEAST THIRTY PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN THE FIRE, BUT POLICE COULD NOT CONFIRM AUSTRIAN RADIO REPORTS THAT A THIRD VICTIM HAD DIED IN HOSPITAL.

    AS THE FIRE RAGED, A MAN WALKED UP TO VIENNESE POLICEMEN AND SAID: "I SET THE PLACE ON FIRE". HE WAS BEING HELD BY POLICE TONIGHT AND WAS IDENTIFIED AS COLMAN LONSONOZY, A 47-YEAR-OLD HUNGARIAN OF CANADIAN NATIONALITY.

    THE TWO VICTIMS WERE BOTH AUSTRIAN EMPLOYEES AS WERE, IT WAS REPORTED, THE INJURED. NO CANADIAN CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED.

    WITHIN MINUTES, THE FIRE RAGED THROUGH THE THIRD FLOOR OF THE OFFICE BLOCK, SCORCHING OUT METAL WINDOW FRAMES AND BUCKLING WALLS. AN EMBASSY SPOKESMAN SAID THE FIRE WAS CONCENTRATED IN THE COMMERCIAL SECTION OF THE EMBASSY WHERE A SMALL GROUP OF EMPLOYEES WERE TRAPPED FOR A TIME BY THE FLAMES.

    CANADIAN DIPLOMATS ESCAPED BY CLAMBERING THROUGH WINDOWS INTO A COURTYARD BELOW OR ON LADDERS HURRIEDLY SET UP BY PEOPLE NEARBY.

    OVER A HUNDRED FIREMEN WERE NEEDED TO FIGHT THE BLAZE.
