  • Description

Within six days of becoming lawn tennis champion of France. Rumanian Ilie Nastase made himself champion of Italy on Monday (11 June). His Paris victory over Nikki Pilic has been described as an anti-climax -- his win over Manuel Orantes of Spain in Rome was even easier -- 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

The Roman crowd disliked Nastase, and they constantly cheered Orantes. But, after winning the opening game, the Spaniard played without conviction. His volleys were weak and his backhand inaccurate. Towards the end of the brief (one hour and five minutes) game, the crowd began to jeer him. Nastase took the next eleven games with apparent case.

Before playing the final, Nastase had to play his semi-final against Italy's Paulo Bertolucci in the morning of the same day.

The Rumanian ace is now taking a break from tennis with a holiday on the Black Sea, and has withdrawn from the U.K.'s John Player tournament in Nottingham. In the last two months, he has won 43 singles matches and lost only one -- to Adriano Panetta.
