  • Description

Visnews film shows havoc caused by massive tidal waves - caused by an under-sea earthquake - to the town of Hilo, Hawaii, in April, 1946, and makes a striking comparison 14 years later to the vast destruction created by 30-ft high tidal waves to the same town and area, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, May 24, when - generated by the calamitous Chilean earthquakes - they swept 10,000 miles across the Pacific at 400-500 miles per hour.

Worst hit was the east coast of Japan, north of Tokyo, where giant waves reportedly killed and swept away at least 800 people, injured 600 and left many thousands of homes inundated and 900 fishing vessels sunk and washed ashore. Miyako city was almost entirely submerged and Susaki City on Shikoku Island was hard hit.

Hawaii reported that deaths were expected to exceed 50 - the town of Hilo was the hardest hit with 30 dead, 27 missing and 57 injured. In Sydney, Australia, an official stated that the harbour tide record recorded "went crazy" and said a whirlpool dotted the whole great harbour and that the sea-level rose and fell rapidly. In New Zealand the tidal wave wrecked dozens of small craft and seriously damaged the electrical system at Port Lyttelton. The Solomon Isles were also hit but no serious damage was reported. Geneva is to set up an International Earthquake appeal fund to aid victims.

Two days of earthquakes in Chile - May 21/22 - devastated 500 miles of coast-line, killing 350 people and injuring 1,500.
