The town of Satkhira, situated along the Khulna - Jessore road in East Pakistan, is virtually deserted following a report that a column of 95 vehicles of the Pakistan army is heading towards the town from Jessore. But amid deserted streets and alongside a vital bridge before the town, men of the East Pakistan rifles have built trenches and organised ambushes. Yesterday (Thursday) it was reported that the advancing Pakistani column was turning back to Jessore - their commanders having decided the danger from ambushes was too high.
SYNOPSIS: A column of 95 vehicles of the Pakistani army were reported last week to be approaching the town of Satkhira ... and the population of the town fled immediately.
The town closed down. Most of the shops were closed, though a handful continued to trade. A few rickshaws carried on playing for trade ... and many families used them to leave the town with their belongings. The rich had already left the town in their cars. The less wealthy left in scooter taxis or bicycle rickshaws ... the Pakistani army column was reported moving from Jessore towards Khulna ... and Satkhira is right on the road.
The advancing Pakistani column will have to pass this bridge, which is about 12 miles before Satkhira ... but not everybody left the town. Men of the East Pakistan rifles, now part of the Liberation Army, have taken up positions along-side the bridge and along the road. It's a good location for ambushes. The men dug trenches and set up ambush posts. They may also blow up the bridge, if it'll stop the Pakistani advance. But the latest report ... last Thursday ... is that the Pakistani column has turned back to Jessore anyway ... their commanders think the danger from ambushes is too high. PAUSE THREE SECONDS. In the meantime, there's still heavy fighting for Khulna, a strategic inland port.
