  • Description

Chinese leaders have paid their last respects to former Foreign Minister Chen Yi -- hero of the Communist rise to power who died of intestinal caner on January 6th aged 71.

He became a familiar figure in asia, African and East European capitals after becoming Foreign Minister in 1958, until he dropped from public view in 1969, following the turbulence of the 1966-7 Cultural Revolution.

This library compilation shows him with Ayub Khan and the then Pakistan Foreign Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1965, in Djakarta with President Sukarno also in 1965, and at a social function in Peking's Great Hall in 1967.

Chen Yi never formally lost his title of Foreign Minister, though Chi Peng-fei was named as acting Foreign Minister.

The New China News Agency account of the funeral named him as Foreign Minister and said he concurrently and other titles. An earlier Peking Radio version identified him only as Vice-Chairman of the Communist Party's Military Commission.
