  • Description

Egypt, Syria and the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) began talks in Cairo on Friday (20 September) designed to settle the differences between the three groups. The aim is to arrive at a united Arab policy on the Palestine question in time for the next session of the Middle East peace talks in Geneva.

Egypt's Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi hosted the talks. The other delegations were led by the Syrian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Abdel Halim Khaddam, and the Director of the PLO's Political Department, Mr. Farouk Kaddoumi.

The Cairo newspaper Al Ahram said the meeting was expected to cover three main areas - the PLO's role and responsibility in the Palestine problem, the disengagement of forces on the west bank of the Jordan River, and the fate of the Palestinian territory in the event of a partial Israeli withdrawal.
