    AN ESTIMATED 100,000 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE FUNERAL IN ATHENS TODAY (FRIDAY) OF SOTIRIOUS PETROULAS, THE 25-YEAR-OLD STUDENT WHO WAS KILLED ON WEDNESDAY IN A CLASH BETWEEN STUDENT DEMONSTRATORS AND POLICE. THE AUTHORITIES WERE PREPARED FOR FURTHER VIOLENCE TODAY, BUT HE FUNERAL WENT OFF QUIETLY.

    WEDNESDAY'S DEMONSTRATIONS WERE IN SUPPORT OF MR. GEORGE PAPANDREOU, THE FORMER GREEK PRIME MINISTER, WHO WAS DISMISSED BY KING CONSTANTINE FOR HIS EFFORTS TO PURGE THE ARMY OF RIGHT-WING ELEMENTS. PETROULAS WAS KILLED, BELIEVED SUFFOCATED, WHEN THE DEMONSTRATION DEVELOPED INTO A CLASH WITH POLICE, WHO USED TEAR-GAS TO DISPERSE THE STUDENTS.

    MR. PAPANDREOU WAS AMONG THOSE WHO ATTENDED PETROULAS' FUNERAL TODAY IN THE ATHENS CATHEDRAL. HUNDREDS OF RED AND WHITE CARNATIONS COVERED THE GLASS-TOPPED COFFIN AND A HUGE PORTRAIT OF THE DEAD STUDENT PRECEDED THE FUNERAL CORTEGE. A BIG CROWD WALKED IN PROCESSION WITH THE COFFIN TO THE CEMETERY.

    THE 77-YEAR-OLD FORMER PRIME MINISTER HAD ESPECIALLY ASKED THE MOURNERS TO MAINTAIN "PEACE AND ORDER" AT THE FUNERAL, AND APART FROM SOME SHOUTING OF SLOGANS BY STUDENTS IN THE PROCESSION, HIS REQUEST WAS ADHERED TO. AT A PRESS CONFERENCE, MR. PAPANDREOU DECLARED THAT HIS SUCCESSOR APPOINTED BY THE KING, MR. GEORGE ATHANASSIADES-NOVAS, WOULD EITHER RESIGN OR FALL NEXT WEEK.
