  • Description

THE DIVIDED CITY OF JERUSALEM WAS QUIET ON TUESDAY (NOVEMBER 29) -- THE 19TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION ON THE PARTITION OF PALESTINE. IN HIS CAPITAL, AMMAN, KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN GAVE A NEWS CONFERENCE.

THE UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION OF NOVEMBER, 1947, CALLED FOR THE PARTITION OF PALESTINE INTO AN ARAB STATE, AND IN INTERNATIONAL REGIME FOR JERUSALEM.

AFTER THE WAR BETWEEN THE ARABS AND ISRAEL WHICH FOLLOWED THE END OF THE BRITISH MANDATE IN APRIL 1949, PALESTINE WAS DIVIDED BETWEEN THE NEW ISRAELI STATE AND NEIGHBOURING JORDAN, WITH JERUSALEM DIVIDED BETWEEN THE TWO.

JERUSALEM WAS QUIET ON MONDAY BUT THERE WERE DEMONSTRATIONS IN BETHLEHEM AND JERICHO.

IN AMMAN, KING HUSSEIN MET NEWSMEN BRIEFLY. TODAY (THURSDAY), HE SAID HIS COUNTRY WAS ANXIOUS TO GAIN THE FRIENDSHIP OF THE LARGEST POSSIBLE NUMBER OF FOREIGN STATES, WHILE MAINTAINING THE PRINCIPLE OF NON-ALIGNMENT.

KING HUSSEIN SAID JORDAN WOULD BE GUIDED IN ITS RELATIONS WITH THESE STATES BY ITS NATIONAL INTERESTS AND THE PRINCIPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS CHARTER.
