    KIM 45, UPSET REP. YOUNG SAM KIM BY 458-410 VOTES ON THE SECOND BALLOT AT THE PARTY'S NOMINATING CONVENTION. THERE WERE 16 INVALID VOTES.

    JUNG DAE KIM WENT INTO THE CONVENTION AS AN UNDERDOG. PARTY LEADER CHIN YU SAN HAD RECOMMENDED YOUNG SAM KIM FOR NOMINATION. THROUGH INTENSIVE POLITICAL MANEUVERING DURING AN INTERMISSION AFTER THE FIRST BALLOTING. DAE JUNG KIM SECURED ENOUGH VOTES NEEDED FOR HIS TRIUMPH.

    THE TWO CONTENDERS FOR NOMINATION HAD TO GO TO A SECOND BALLOT OF THE 884 DELEGATES AT THE CONVENTION AT SEOUL CITIZENS HALL TO DECIDE THE WINNER. IN THE FIRST BALLOTING, YOUNG SAM KIM LED 421 TO 383, BUT NEITHER CANDIDATE HAD THE NECESSARY SIMPLE MAJORITY.

    THE OUTCOME WAS A SERIOUS BLOW TO PARTY LEADER YU WHO HAD TRIED TO PERSUADE DAE JUNG KIM TO WITHDRAW FROM THE RACE TO INSURE UNANIMOUS SUPPORT FOR YOUNG SAM KIM. OBSERVERS PREDICTED THE PARTY WILL NOW FACE A SERIOUS POWER STRUGGLE.

    BECAUSE THE PARTY HAS AN ANNUAL CONVENTION SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER, THE PARTY'S SO CALLED, "ANTIMAINSTREAM FACTION," INCLUDING DIE JUNG KIM'S SUPPORTERS, ARE EXPECTED TO STAGE A DETERMINED EFFORT TO GRAB THE LEADERSHIP.
