Background: MARCH 30, THE MIDDLE OF AN 'ARMED FORCES WEEK' IN ADEN, SAW AN 'OPEN DAY' AT THE ROYAL AIR FORCE STATION AT KHORMAKSAR. MR. WATKINSON, THE BRITISH MINISTER OF DEFENCE, WAS AMONG CROWDS OF SPECTATORS - INCLUDING 60,000 ARABS - WATCHING AN EXCITING AEROBATIC DISPLAY BY 'JAVELIN', 'HUNTER' AND 'SEA VIXEN' JET AIRCRAFT, AND A FLY-PAST BY THE HEAVIER TYPE OF TRANSPORT AND RECONNAISSANCE PLANES.

THERE WAS A MOMENT OF TRAGEDY DURING THE FIRST DISPLAY WHEN A HUNTER JET CRASHED, AND THE PILOT WAS KILLED. THE HUNGERS CONTINUED WITH THEIR DISPLAY.

THE RAF STATION AT KHORMAKSAR IS BRITAIN'S LARGEST OVERSEAS AIR BASE. LESS THAN FOUR YEARS AGO A FIGHTER SQUADRON AND A SMALL COMMUNICATIONS FLIGHT WERE THE ONLY FLYING UNITS PERMANENTLY BASED THERE. TODAY THE STATION BOASTS SIX SQUADRONS AND A HELICOPTER FLIGHT.

KHORMAKSAR IS THE MAIN STAGING POST BETWEEN THE UNITED KINGDOM, SINGAPORE AND AUSTRALIA; IT IS ALSO A TRANSHIPMENT CENTRE FOR PASSENGERS AND FREIGHT ARRIVING BY SERVICE AIRCRAFT FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM AND DESTINED FOR KENYA AND THE PERSIAN GULF.
