  • Description

TECHNICIANS WORKING AT TOP SPEED LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) REPAIRED A SABOTAGED POWER LINE FROM THE KARIBA DAM, RESTORING FULL ELECTRIC POWER TO THE ZAMBIA COPPER BELT. SABOTEURS DYNAMITED A 110-FOOT (34 METRE) PYLON NEAR THE ZAMBIAN TOWN OF KITWE ON FRIDAY, CUTTING ALL POWER FROM THE DAM, WHICH STRADDLES THE ZAMBESI RIVER BORDER OF ZAMBIA AND RHODESIA.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE ZAMBIA POWER CORPORATION SAID IN THE CAPITAL, LUSAKA, THAT A TECHNICAL FAILURE ON THE POWER LINE FROM THE CONGO FURTHER REDUCED SUPPLIES IN THE COPPER BELT FOR 40 MINUTES YESTERDAY. THERE HAD BEEN NO DISLOCATION IN ESSENTIAL SERVICES, BUT A FEW HOUSING AREAS HAD POWER CUTS TO REDUCE THE LOAD.

THE PYLON WAS BLASTED 27 MILES SOUTH OF KITWE BY A CHARGE SET WITH 100 STICKS OF DYNAMITE. AN ATTEMPT WAS ALSO MADE TO DAMAGE A SECOND PYLON, BUT THE CHARGE FAILED TO DETONATE. THIS WAS THE FIRST ACT OF SABOTAGE REPORTED IN ZAMBIA SINCE 1961, AND THE ONLY TIME THE VITAL POWER LINE HAD BEEN ATTACKED. POLICE SAID THE DAMAGE WAS CLEARLY THE WORK OF SOMEBODY SKILLED IN THE USE OF EXPLOSIVES.

WITHIN HOURS OF THE OUTRAGE, PRESIDENT KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA SENT A FORMAL WRITTEN REQUEST TO THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT FOR TROOPS TO GUARD THE GIANT KARIBA HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME. THE PRESIDENT VISITED THE SITE OF THE EXPLOSION. LATER HE TOLD A POLITICAL MEETING AT NDOLA, IN THE COPPER BELT, THAT WHILE HIS REQUEST FOR TROOPS HAD BEEN MADE TO BRITAIN, ZAMBIA RESERVED THE RIGHT TO CALL FOR HELP FROM ANY FRIENDLY COUNTRY TO GUARD THE DAM.
